Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Election Monitors Jobs


The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an independent National Human Rights Institution created by Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and established by the Government of Kenya through an Act of Parliament (the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act, 2011) and under the United Nations Paris Principles. KNCHR’s mandate includes furthering the protection and promotion of human rights in Kenya, acting as a watchdog over the Government in the area of human rights, and the provision of leadership in moving the country towards a human rights state.

KNCHR fulfills its human rights mandate through a number of programs and in relation to this vacancy intends to roll out an elections monitoring project under its reforms and accountability department. The Commission’s main office is in Nairobi and with three regional offices in Wajir, Kitale and Mombasa. The Commission hereby invites applications for the following short term positions for its Election Monitoring project:

ELECTION MONITORS (80 POSITIONS)

Reports To: Project Coordinator
Location: Head Office
Salary: Kshs. 25,000
Duration: Four months contract

Duties and Responsibilities
  • To monitor and accurately record incidences of electoral related human rights violations during political party nominations and other electoral related events.
  • Monitor and document incidents of violence and potential conflicts threats in identified hotspots.
  • Prepare and submit weekly monitoring reports to the project coordinator
  • To perform any other lawful duties as may be assigned from time to time by the project coordinator.

In order to undertake the assignment, the monitor shall:
  • Participate in the induction training that will be organized by KNCHR
  • Not delegate the assignment to any other person
  • Use the monitoring tool provided by KNCHR.

Skills, Experience and Academic Qualifications
  • A minimum of a diploma in a Social Science
  • Knowledge of the Constitution, Kenyan electoral process and environment
  • Demonstrable research and interviewing skills
  • Demonstrable writing and communication skills.

Other Attributes
In addition to the above qualifications for all the positions above, the suitable candidates should posses the following skills and attributes;

  • Good interpersonal and people management skills
  • Demonstrable research, writing and communication skills
  • Demonstrable solid commitment to human rights and social justice
  • Experience in lobbying and advocacy work
  • Ability and willingness to work in difficult situations.
